Congressman Tonko to announce art competition winners

 

TROY – On Monday, May 13, Congressman Paul Tonko will announce the winners of the Congressional Art Competition during an event that will showcase all work that was submitted.

More than 40 pieces of work were submitted from 19 area schools. The winning artwork will be displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C.

The artwork was reviewed by a volunteer panel of judges from the Capital Region arts community.

The competition was started in 1982 as an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents.

The event will be held at the Arts Center of the Capital Region on River Street from 5-6:30 p.m.

SCHENECTADY – On Tuesday, April 9, Capital Region audiences will get the chance to experience the magic of Peter Pan at Proctors Theater.

The six-day run of this classic show stars legendary Broadway actress Cathy Rigby in the starring role. The show also stars two of Broadway's finest actors, Brent Barret and Kim Crosby.

Peter Pan is a family friendly spectacle full of timeless moments and a story that will inspire anyoen who see's it.

Aziz Ansari comes to The Palace

Aziz Ansari comes to The Palace

 

ALBANY – On Tuesday, May 14, comedian Aziz Ansari will bring his special brand of comedy to The Palace Theatre.

Ansari currently co-stars on the hit, Emmy nominated NBC comedy Parks and Recreation. He has released his second comedy special and been named the Funniest Man under 30 by Rolling Stone as well as one of the Top 10 Comedians of the Decade by Paste Magazine.

Walking Tour of Proctors

 

SCHENECTADY – On Sunday, March 17, Proctors Theater will hold a free walking tour of the historical theater and arts complex.

Visitors are invited to come early and enjoy lunch at the Apostrophe Café or take part in the Schenectady Greenmarket.

At 1p.m. at the doors to the Mainstage the tour will begin and showcase all of the highpoints within the complex, including the dressing rooms, backstage, GE Theatre, and the Schenectady Heritage Visitors Center.

The tour concludes with a demonstration by area organist Carl Hackert on Goldie, Proctos Wurlitzer organ.

Demetri Martin comes to The Egg

ALBANY – On Saturday, March 16, comedian Demetri Martin will perform his special brand of comedy at The Egg.

Martin is best known for his odd take on everyday things. He has appeared on The Daily Show as well as in the films Taking Woodstock and Contagion.

He has been seen on Comedy Central in his stand up special Demetri Martin Person.

SCHENECTADY – The award-winning Fela! will arrive at Proctors Mainstage for three shows only on Friday, March 8, featuring Grammy-award winning recording artist Michelle Williams from Destiny's Child, as Sandra Isadore.

“I am thrilled to join the cast of Fela!,” said Michelle Williams. “This musical journey

is one that I’ve wanted to be a part of since first seeing it on stage in 2008.  The sounds, the passion and the politics of Fela Kuti have long intrigued me and speak to my heart.  I am simply honored.”

Fela! tells the true story of Kuti, who created Afrobeat music, by mixing together pounding eclectic rhythms with lyrics that attacked the dictatorships that ruled Africa.

Amy has appeared on Howard Stern, Jimmy Kimmel, Conan, Jimmy Fallon, Louie, and HBO’s Girls. She has also been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Cosmopolitan Magazine and Variety.
