Venture Bplan Series to take place May 30

The Venture Bplan Series will take place on Wednesday, May 30 and it is a collaboration of the Center for Economic Growth and RPI Incubation Programs.

According to the Center for Economic Growth’s website, the regularly-scheduled forum is designed for entrepreneurs to get visibility to the region’s angel and institutional investors, business service providers, advisors, students, faculty, alumni and most of the early-stage business community.

The forum offers a first-look for the business community to the best and brightest early-stage growth companies in the region.

Free cancer screenings for residents in local areas

Free cancer screenings for residents in local areas

The Cancer Services Programs of Albany and Rensselaer counties teamed up with American Cancer Society and St. Peter’s Health Care Partners to provide free cancer screenings to men and women in the local community.

The free screenings offered will be mammograms and Pap tests for women ages 40 and older and colorectal screenings for men and women ages 50 and older.

There will also be free screenings for uninsured residents provided through the Cancer Services Program year round at St. Peter’s Health Partners.

If you live in Albany or Rensselaer County and would like to make an appointment, please call 454-4013. If you live outside Albany County, please call the Cancer Services Program at 1-866-422-CANCER (2262) to find a screening near you.

Six Capital Region companies selected for 2012 Venture Forum

Six Capital Region companies have been selected for the 2012 Venture Forum, a collaboration between the Center for Economic Growth’s (CEG) SmartStart UNYTECH Forum and Western NY’s Bright Buffalo Niagara Forum.

According to a statement, a total of 32 high-growth early stage companies will be featured, including those from the area.

This year’s list includes dkorrlife.com, Chef Key, Praxis Technology, H2 Pump, Ultradian Diagnostics and Vital IV. They will present their business plan to more than 70 Angel and VC investors from the Northeast, New England, Mid-Atlanta, Niagara-Canadian, Boston and NYC corridors.

The Greatest Show on Earth has arrived

The Greatest Show on Earth arrived today with the ceremonial animal march. Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus, now in their 141st year,  will be performing their newest show Fully Charged at the Times Union Center from May 2-6.

There is a special all access pre-show party. Everyone is invited to the arena floor one hour before showtime to meet the performers and animals.

Liberteks to host Recycle Day May 5

Liberteks to host Recycle Day May 5

A Recycle Day will be held on May 5 by Liberteks, a Guilderland-based computer technology provider. The event will take place at Liberteks’ 1648 Western Avenue location, across from Crossgates Mall.

According to a statement, Liberteks is currently running a technology recycling program of CDs, DVDs, VCR tapes, computers and other technology items. The Recycle Day is being held to help animal support group, Guilderhaven.

Technology items can be dropped off at Liberteks office all day Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Guildrehaven was founded in 2001 and they provide food, financial assistance, transportation and medical intervention for New York residents and their animals. The group also focuses on rescues in the community.

In May 2009, Guilderhaven and the Cat Care Coalition (CCC) started a low cost dog spay/neuter program. They have spayed/neutered 863 cats and 67 dogs in 2010 and received a grant from the Doris Day Foundation for their efforts.

Healthy eating seminar to take place May 3

The Capital District Center for Independence (CDCI) will host a free seminar on improving nutrition, diet and eating habits by hosting “Ketchup is not a Vegetable” on Thursday, May 3 from 3 to 4 p.m. The event will take place at the center located at 845 Central Avenue in Albany.

According to a statement, the free and interactive workshop will get people started and provide strategies to reduce mindless eating.

“Most of us know a number of things we could be doing to improve our health and energy level. However, we don’t always know where to start or how to make some of these changes,” said CDCI Executive Director Laurel Kelley. “This interactive workshop will help you to take stock of where you are and set some individual goals and strategies to help get you from here to there.”

Sandra Varno, MS, RD, CDN, Resource Educator at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Albany County will speak at the seminar.

CREDC to hold meeting Tuesday, May 1

CREDC to hold meeting Tuesday, May 1

The Capital Region Economic Development Council will hold a meeting on Tuesday, May 1.

According to a statement, the CREDC meeting will include an update on council activities and project tracking, an overview of the council’s new workgroup structure and a quick presentation on the work of the regional councils in 2012 and the second round of the Consolidated Funding Application process.

People who attend the meeting will also have the opportunity to provide the council with written questions and feedback related to the Strategic Plan and CFA process.

The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. at the RPI East Campus Athletic Village (ECAV) gymnasium in Troy.

Members of the CREDC, businesses, individuals, organizations, labor and education representatives from the Capital Region are invited to attend the event.

The council defines the Capital Region as Albany, Columbia, Greene, Saratoga, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Warren and Washington counties.
