CSX introduces GenSet at Selkirk Yard
News

The U.S. EPA, NYSDOT, and CSX introduced the first ultra-low emission GenSet locomotive this morning which will operate in CSX’s Selkirk Yard.

This cutting-edge technology is being through a public-private funding partnership among CSX, NYSDOT and the U.S. EPA.

CSX is the first railroad to utilize GenSet locomotives in New York, which can reduce nitrous oxide and particulate matter emissions by 77% and carbon dioxide emissions by up to 25% compared with traditional locomotives. CSX unveiled the first GenSet locomotive in New York State in 2009 at its Oak Point Yard in the Bronx, where the unit currently operates.  CSX has invested more than $1.5 billion to improve the environmental footprint of its locomotive fleet and, since 1980, has reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 90%.

Guests and members of the media got guided tour of the GenSet locomotive this morning. CSX representatives were on-site to discuss the environmental benefits of rail and network operations.
