Library Uses Technology to Promote Student Learning

 The Amsterdam Free Library Broadband Technology Opportunity Program is hosting Teen-Tech Week this week.

The free program is open to all students and their families. 

During Teen-Tech Week, students will participate in activities that relate reading and learning to different technologies prevalent today such as computers and audio/visual equipment and resources such as social networking. 

“Teen-Tech Week is an opportunity to engage young minds using a medium with which they feel a connection and help them to explore concepts in literature, math, science and history,” said BTOP director, Thom Georgia in a statement.  “The BTOP staff has been reaching out to our young patrons to develop a program which will be both entertaining and still foster learning.”

Getting ready for growth in Saratoga County

MALTA -- Change is coming, and the town of Malta wants to be ready.

Residents went to the Malta Community Center to see a glimpse of what the future may hold for their downtown and to give their input.

This proposal has Downtown divided into zones -- the Town Center, the high-density focus of the downtown, a pedestrian-friendly Four Corner Village and two Gateways.

Malta is getting ready for new business and new growth.

Glens Falls library receives $244,000 BTOP Grant

Congressman Scott Murphy announced Wednesday that Crandall Public Library is receiving a $244,000 Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP) Grant.

The funding will be used to establish a Public Computing Center (PCC), allowing the library to add a minimum of 15 new computers.

As part of the grant, the library will also be adding two full time employees to staff the center.

“The Public Computing Center will have a direct impact on the residents of the greater Glens Falls community, and the two full-time jobs created through this grant is just the beginning of job creation as a result of the PCC,” said Murphy.

Online services go all over Albany

Albany Public Library, Tech Valley Communications, along with a coalition of community-based organizations have come together to launch ALLbany OnlineThis newly branded initiative was created to increase computer and high-speed internet access, usability, and utility for city residents. 

The library has also been awarded a $244,517 grant from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP) to increase computer center capacity.

Part of the NYS Libray’s “broadbandexpress@your library” project, the BTOP grant is the largest federal grant ever received by the Albany Public Library.
