TVHS students make identity videos

Tech Valley High School students are busy making videos identifying who they are.

When the videos are completed the digital diaries will answer questions like how they students see themselves from the inside out and what makes them unique.

The students are being assisted by Ellie Markovitch who is a resident artist and video instructor from the New Media Alliance

TVHS’s Service Club recognized as a Key Club

TVHS’s Service Club recognized as a Key Club

Tech Valley High School now has a Key Club. The TVHS’s Service Club has officially been recognized by the Kiwanis Club as a Key Club.

"We are now part of an international organization of people dedicated to service.  We are now part of that network. This is something the students have been working towards for some time," said Club Advisor Jen Hower in a statement.

TVHS’s Service Club has volunteered for humanitarian causes including raising funds for the hungry and gathering donations for homeless shelters.

According to the Key Club International website, the organization is sponsored by Kiwanis International and “Key clubs assists Kiwanis in carrying out its mission to serve the children of the world.”

The club will receive its official charter from Key Club International on June 6 during an 11 a.m. ceremony in the Massry Conference Center at the Cancer Research Center, UAlbany East Campus.

Tech Valley students react to Presidential visit

EAST GREENBUSH - Classes at Tech Valley High School went on with out interruption Tuesday morning, that is until the arrival of the President.

Students, teachers and staff at the school, kept their eyes glued on a projection screen for President Obama’s entire speech at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany.

These students are at the center of the excitement not just from a visit to the area but also at the center of a speech that highlighted exactly what the future holds for them.

Tech Valley High School was created five years ago in an effort to provide kids with the education they need to succeed in the high tech and global economy. Their major focus is on math, science, and technology.

The President gave them plenty of reasons to be optimistic, they are also proud that the jobs of the future, the jobs they are training for will be waiting for them in their own backyard at places like Global Foundries and GE.

TVHS principal to attend president’s speech

Dan Liebert, Tech Valley High School principal, will attend President Obama’s speech in Albany Tuesday.

According to a statement from the school, the principal received an invite on Saturday from the leadership of the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) who will be hosting President Obama.

"I am very pleased and excited to be invited to witness President Obama deliver his remarks," said Liebert in a statement. "My invitation reflects all of the hard work Tech Valley High students and faculty have put forth in its brief history in making TVHS one of the premiere public high schools in the country."

In 2009, Leah Penniman, a teacher at TVHS attended President Obama’s speech at Hudson Valley Community College.

TVHS students receive tutoring from Sage students

TVHS students receive tutoring from Sage students

The tutoring program with Tech Valley High School and Sage College was launched earlier this year and matches college student in work study programs with Tech Valley High School students who need help with a subject.

According to a statement, the program is the brainchild of TVHS teacher Jen Hower and Andrea Pike, library commons specialist at The Sage Colleges. The college students meet with TVHS students during school hours.

"It came about through a brainstorm session between Andrea and I on how to better help the students. It's sort in a trial run stage right now, but we expect it to expand in the fall with we hope to be more organized with tutors in the class and after school," said Hower.

The Sage students are all working towards varying degrees including Chinese studies, physics, math and physical therapy and some have expressed an interest in teaching.

TVHS students creating recreation area

Tech Valley High School students created a recreational area looked to math and the sky for inspiration.

Trigonometry students at TVHS used hand-held tools to determine the height of different objects on the University at Albany East Campus. The calculations are being used to help the students plan an outdoor community recreation area.

"They have been told to create their own devices to measure angles and elevation on the campus," said teacher Matthew Brom.

Schumer says raising interest rate unacceptable

If congress doesn't act, the interest rate for Stafford loans will double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent.

New York’s senior senator, Chuck Schumer says that's unacceptable.

Schumer is pushing for legislation extending the 3.4 percent rate for one year and hopes to make it permanent.

A vote on the issue is scheduled in the house on Friday.
